Portugal citizenship timeline — Lei Orgânica 1/2026

Portugal's 2026 nationality reform (Lei Orgânica 1/2026, published 19 May 2026) raised the naturalisation requirement from 5 to 10 years of legal residency — 7 for CPLP and EU nationals. Applications filed before the reform follow the previous 5-year rule. Pages across this site previously cited the old 5-year timeline; all affected pages (country guides, comparisons, rankings, migration lanes, FAQs and structured data) were corrected on 15 July 2026. Permanent-residency timelines (5 years) were and remain correct. Amended 15 July 2026: the seven-year track covers EU citizens as well as CPLP nationals — Art. 6.º(1)(b) of Lei Orgânica 1/2026 grants it to nationals of Portuguese-speaking countries and of EU member states.
