Digital Nomad
Who it is for
The official page defines a digital nomad as a third-country national (a non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizen) who is employed or performs work through communication technology for a company, or their own company, that is not registered in Croatia, and who does not perform work or provide services to employers in Croatia. The official page asks for proof of purpose. This can be a contract of employment or another document, such as a signed official letter, proving that the person performs work through communication technology for a foreign employer or for their own company which is not registered in the Republic of Croatia. The page also says that close family members of a digital nomad who has been granted temporary stay may join them in Croatia, and refers readers to the rules for temporary stay for family reunification.
Income and funds
The page says third-country nationals regulating their temporary stay as digital nomads must have an amount corresponding to at least 2.5 average monthly net salaries paid for the previous year (official Croatian Bureau of Statistics data). It then says this amount is increased by 10% of the average monthly net salary for each additional family member or life partner or informal life partner. The amount required on a monthly basis is currently a minimum of 3,622.50 EUR. For an intended 12-month stay, you can provide proof of at least 43,470.00 EUR already available in a bank account. For 18 months, it asks for at least 65,205.00 EUR in a bank account. The page cites the Regulation on the manner of calculating and the amount of means of subsistence for third-country nationals in the Republic of Croatia (Official Gazette no. 14/21 and 3/26) for this rule.
Proof of means and health insurance
The page lists three ways to show means of subsistence, joined by 'OR': a bank statement showing the total amount required for the period of intended stay; a bank statement showing proof of regular income to the required monthly amount; and payslips for at least six months as proof of means of subsistence in the required monthly amount. The page says these must be clearly labelled and submitted as a .pdf file (maximum size 2MB). For health cover, it asks for proof of health insurance for the period you plan to be in Croatia. Travel or private health insurance must cover the territory of the Republic of Croatia.
Documents
The page asks for a copy of a valid travel document (i.e. passport), valid for three months longer than the intended stay. It also asks for proof that you have not been convicted of criminal offences from your home country or a country in which you have resided for more than one year immediately before arriving in Croatia; this must be a legalised document. For a first application without a Croatian address, you can give a temporary address as your intended stay address, such as a hostel or hotel where you have a reservation or confirmed reservation. Copies of documents should be submitted in the Croatian or English language. The page adds that translations into Croatian or English must be made by an authorized translator and that documents must clearly state the currency in which funds are stated.
How to apply and register your address
The page says you can submit the application online, and that it will be forwarded to the competent police administration or station for the location of your intended stay in Croatia. Besides the online route, the page says a third-country national who requires a visa to enter Croatia shall submit the application to a Croatian diplomatic mission or consular office, and that a police-station application from them is rejected. If you do not need a visa to enter Croatia and apply in person, you can apply at a Croatian embassy or consulate, or at the competent police administration or station if you are legally residing in Croatia. Third-country nationals must register their temporary residence address within 3 days of entering Croatia at the competent police administration or police station for the location of their stay.
Fees
If the application is submitted at a Croatian diplomatic mission or consular post, the page says the costs are paid when applying: 55.74 EUR for granting temporary stay and 93.00 EUR for the long-term visa (visa D), or 41.14 EUR for the biometric residence card. If it is submitted at a police administration or police station, the costs are paid after the stay is granted: 46.45 EUR for granting temporary stay, 9.29 EUR in administrative fees for issuing the biometric residence permit and 31.85 EUR for the biometric residence card (59.73 EUR for the accelerated procedure). If you submit your visa application through the VFS visa center, the page says you will be charged an additional fee for the service.
How long it lasts, renewal and new applications
Temporary stay is granted for up to a maximum of eighteen months, possibly even less. The page says that if the temporary stay was granted for less than 18 months, you may apply for an extension not later than 60 days before it expires, in person, at a police administration or police station for the place where you live. In that case the extension is granted for a maximum of 6 months. The page says a new digital-nomad application can be submitted 6 months after a previously granted temporary stay expires, whether that stay was as a digital nomad, for family reunification, for life partnership with a digital nomad, or for other purposes.
