Who it is for and what it does not allow
The visa is for people who provide remote work or telework services from Colombia, over the internet, only for foreign companies, either self-employed or as employees, or who want to start a digital-content or information-technology business of interest to Colombia. Applicants must hold a passport from a country or territory whose citizens do not need a visa for short stays in Colombia; the visa page of Colombia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists these countries (Lists A, B and C; for List C the exemption is conditional). This visa does not allow working or carrying out paid activity with a legal entity or individual domiciled in Colombia. Digital nomads whose nationality does not need a visa for short stays can instead enter without a visa, with an entry permit from the migration authority, for up to 90 days, extendable to a maximum of 180 days in a calendar year, as long as the stay does not generate payments from Colombian companies.

Income, health insurance and documents
The official text asks the applicant to show, with bank statements, minimum income equivalent to three current legal monthly minimum wages (SMLMV) during the last three months. It also lists a health policy with coverage in Colombia against all risk in case of accident, illness, maternity, disability, hospitalization, death or repatriation, for the planned length of stay. Supporting documents other than valid passports or travel documents must have been issued no more than three months before the application is registered. Every visa application also needs a recent digital photo, and a passport or travel document valid for at least six months when the application is made, with a copy of the page that shows the holder's personal details.

Letters from your employer or business
Applicants must provide a letter, in Spanish or English, from one or more foreign companies they work for, stating the type of working relationship and the type of pay they receive. If there is a contract with that company, it must be provided; alternatively the applicant can show they are a partner or co-owner of a company abroad, with a letter stating that they do their work for it remotely. In the case of entrepreneurs, the official text asks for a motivation letter explaining the project and the financial and human resources the applicant has or hopes to have.

How to apply and fees
The official text says the application is completed on an online form on the website of Colombia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It also says that meeting all the requirements does not automatically lead to the visa being granted: they are the basis for a full study of the application. Resolution 03969 of 26 March 2026 sets the fee for a visitor (V) visa, the visa type the digital nomad visa belongs to, at USD 56.00 for reviewing the application plus USD 138.00 for issuing it (USD 194.00 in total), or €44.00 plus €106.00 (€150.00 in total). These amounts do not include the stamp tax, which is regulated separately by the Ministry of Finance through the national tax authority (DIAN). The same resolution sets lower or zero fees for some nationalities. After approval, the holder has up to 10 calendar days to pay the issuance fee, or the application is treated as withdrawn. The electronic visa is issued within 10 business days of payment.

Decision time and how long the visa lasts
Once the application is complete, with all required documents, and the review fee is paid, the Visa and Immigration Authority has up to 30 calendar days to issue its decision; if it must consult other entities, the response time can be longer. The official text gives the validity as up to two years. It says the validity of a visa ends in the ordinary way on the expiry date written on it. The resolution also says the validity of any type of visa ends early and automatically when the same person is issued a new visa or obtains Colombian nationality. It states that all types of visa allow multiple entries and transits. When a visa ends, in the ordinary way or early, the foreigner has 30 calendar days to leave Colombia or apply for a new visa.

Family members: applying
The official text says beneficiaries of the main visa holder may apply. Beneficiaries are the spouse, the permanent partner, and children under 25 who depend economically on the main holder (or older children with a certified disability that prevents economic independence). A beneficiary application needs a copy of the main holder's current visa and a copy of the civil record or certificate showing the family or marital relationship with the main holder, with the formalities provided for foreign documents. The main holder must also send a written request declaring that the beneficiary depends on them and that they cover the beneficiary's travel and stay costs, including health cover, and must show enough income to support beneficiaries, through average bank statements for the last six months or an employment certificate.

Family members: duration and limits
A beneficiary visa cannot last longer than the visa granted to the main holder, and a visa held as a beneficiary does not allow work. A beneficiary visa ends early if the main holder's visa ends early, if the beneficiary stops depending economically on the main holder, if the beneficiary stops being the spouse or permanent partner or the couple stops living together, if a child turns 25 (unless a certified disability prevents economic independence), or if the main holder becomes a Colombian national. The Visa and Immigration Authority can also end it at its discretion.
