How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

A temporary residence card is issued for one year, renewable twice for the same reason. Where the marriage and the stay in France have each lasted at least 3 years, the spouse may apply for a 10-year resident card; issuance of the resident card is subject to effective republican integration, notably sufficient knowledge of French assessed in a language interview. Titles issued for family reasons allow professional activity within the applicable rules. A permanent resident card may be issued from the first renewal application of the resident card.
