Which remote workers qualify: foreign employees, freelancers, company owners or other remote professionals?

A digital nomad is a foreign national who obtains temporary residence to carry out remote work using information and communication technologies, exclusively for legal entities registered outside the Republic of Moldova, either as an employee under an individual employment contract, a service provider under a service contract, or a shareholder/partner/administrator providing remote management services to the foreign company.

What income threshold applies, how must it be demonstrated, and how does family affect it where stated?

The applicant must submit a bank statement (in Romanian or English) confirming monthly income/means of subsistence derived from the remote activity of at least 18 forecasted average salaries in Moldova for the current year (three average salaries per month) for the last 6 months before applying. The forecast average monthly salary on the economy for 2026 is 17400 lei. For family reunification, the holder must demonstrate sufficient means of subsistence also for family members.

Where must the employer, company or clients be located? Is local work restricted?

The qualifying work must be performed remotely using information and communication technologies exclusively for a legal entity registered outside the Republic of Moldova (as employer, service recipient, or the foreign company being managed). Can family accompany? How long is the status granted and can it be renewed?

Under Article 38 of the Law on the regime of foreigners, a residence holder may apply for a right of residence for family members for family reunification, provided the applicant holds a valid residence permit; family members receive permits whose validity may not exceed that of the applicant's permit. The digital-nomad permit is granted for the requested period but may not exceed 2 years, and may be extended under the same procedure and eligibility conditions.

What immigration-relevant tax/residence information is officially stated, and what longer-term residence direction exists?

Digital nomads may obtain and extend the right of temporary residence under the conditions of Article 372 of the Law on the regime of foreigners. The official source gives no tax-residence information for digital nomads and does not state a route to permanent residence.
