No port of entry visa is needed in advance by national passport holders of the countries, and in the passport categories, listed in the Department of Home Affairs schedule, for the period stated for each.

For SADC laissez-passer holders the official source mentions 'bona fide official business visits', and for UN laissez-passer holders 'official visits, transit or when applying for accreditation'. It does not state the permitted short-visit purposes for ordinary passport holders.

Holders of United Nations Laissez-passers; excluding its agencies, except for to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and persons performing services on behalf of the United Nations, including their spouses, dependent relatives and other members of their households, do not require port of entry visas when visiting the Republic for periods not exceeding 90 days, including official visits, transit or when applying for accreditation for placement at a UN mission in the Republic: Provided they are in possession of the relevant letters or identification documents to identify themselves at ports of entry as personnel of a United Nations agency.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

The permitted stay is set per country and passport type (diplomatic, official, service, ordinary, special) in the Visa Exemption List: for example 30 days for Algerian diplomatic, official and service passports, 90 days for United Kingdom ordinary passports and 120 days for Albanian diplomatic, official and service passports. 'P/A' marks a period per annum or per calendar year, and for Angola each visit may not exceed 30 days. On readmission, a person (other than a resident of a country bordering South Africa) holding a visa issued on the basis of an exemption is admitted on the same visa; if it has expired, a new visa of up to seven days may be issued, or up to the exemption period if the person arrives from his or her country of residence.
