What the law actually created

A dedicated preferential tier that Vietnam's system never had: before UĐ1, high-skilled foreigners were squeezed through generic work-permit routes. The five pillars visible in early guidance: digital-tech/STEM experts, academic and research talent, corporate leaders, IFC-linked specialists, and selected special cases. Evidence expectations run to seniority, recognised expertise, institutional invitation or IFC employment — the MPS has already stood up the central residence database for UĐ1/UĐ2 records and biometrics.

The IFC route — where the 10 years live

Work directly within an entity registered at the International Financial Centre and the ceiling doubles to ten years, with applications running through the IFC's governing authority rather than standard immigration channels. For senior finance and tech operators being recruited into the IFC project, this is the strongest long-term status Vietnam has ever offered.

Who fits — and who should stop reading the hype

Fits: senior engineers/AI/data specialists hired by qualifying Vietnamese-based organisations; researchers with institutional backing; executives and IFC professionals. Doesn't fit (yet): remote workers with foreign clients, freelancers, and anyone without a qualifying Vietnamese anchor — the criteria are gated by regulation, and no regulation has opened a nomad lane. The honest 2026 answer for location-independent workers: e-visa cycles for presence, and a real DNV country (Japan at ¥10M, Malaysia, or Europe's routes) for status.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Vietnam's UĐ1 a digital nomad visa?

No — it targets high-quality technology talent and designated preferential categories, not remote workers with foreign clients.

How long is the UĐ1 valid?

Up to five years generally, and up to ten for those working in International Financial Centre-registered entities.

Can my family join?

Yes — the UĐ2 covers spouses and children under 18, matching the principal visa's duration.

What should remote workers use instead?

Vietnam's 90-day multiple-entry e-visa (83 eligible ports) or visa-free entry for ~39 nationalities, 14–90 days depending on passport (45 days for ~24 of them).
