Key takeaway: Teaching is regulated in Spain: qualifications are recognised or homologated, and employer-led work authorisation is a separate step. State posts use oposiciones with nationality conditions; the 2026-2027 language assistant allowance is €800 a month for 14 weekly hours, higher in some cases.

Teaching is a regulated profession

Spanish education law requires the Maestro title for primary education, or an equivalent Grado, and a university degree plus postgraduate pedagogical and didactic training for compulsory secondary education and Bachillerato, in both cases without prejudice to other qualifications the Government may enable for certain areas. The Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities lists Maestro en Educación Infantil, Maestro en Educación Primaria and Profesor de ESO y Bachillerato, FP y Enseñanza de Idiomas among the regulated professions open to homologation, and states that homologation enables the practice of a regulated profession in Spain.

Recognising a foreign teaching qualification

The route depends on where the qualification comes from. EU, EEA and Swiss nationals with official university titles leading to a regulated profession can ask the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities to recognise them under Directive 2005/36/EC, and the application is made only through the electronic office. Foreign higher-education titles that match a regulated profession in the annex to Royal Decree 889/2022 can be homologated, otherwise not, and the portal states a fee of €166.50 for homologation and equivalence applications.

Work authorisation is a separate, employer-led step

For employed work, the employer requests the initial residence and work authorisation at the immigration office of the province of the workplace and presents a signed contract. Unless an exemption applies, the national employment situation must allow the hire, tested through a quarterly catalogue of hard-to-fill occupations or through the employer showing difficulty filling the post. The worker must have the qualification legally required for the profession, and the file includes documents proving it. The regulation allows three months to resolve; silence counts as refusal.

Exemptions for some teaching staff

The regulation also exempts some teaching staff from the work authorisation: professors, technicians and researchers invited or hired by a Spanish university, and management or teaching staff of recognised foreign state or private institutions of acknowledged prestige that run their own countries' programmes, subject to listed conditions. Exempt workers whose activity is expected to last more than ninety days must still apply for a temporary residence authorisation without work authorisation, or for a residence visa if they are outside Spain. Whether a given school or post falls within an exemption is for the authorities to decide.

State-school posts and the oposiciones

Entry to the career teaching civil service is through a competitive process (concurso-oposición) called by the respective education administrations, with a practice phase. Among its general conditions, the national regulation requires applicants to be Spanish, nationals of another EU member state, or nationals of a state to which Directive 2004/38/EC applies. Applicants without Spanish nationality must show adequate Castilian, and calls may also require knowledge of the region's co-official language. The opposition phase has two tests: one on the subject specialty, and one on pedagogical aptitude with a teaching programme and an oral lesson unit.

The language assistant programme for 2026-2027

In the Ministry of Education's 2026-2027 call for language assistants in public schools, requirements vary by country of origin. They include nationality or permanent residence in a country with a bilateral agreement, a university degree or at least second-year study, an age of 18 or more (under 45 for new candidates) and, for candidates from some listed countries, C2 English or French. The allowance is €800 a month for 14 weekly hours, higher in some cases; some regions raise hours to 16 with extra pay. The programme runs from 1 November 2026 to 31 May 2027; applications closed on 30 June 2026. New candidates are told to file the visa application at the consulate two months before their start date.

Long-term residence after five years

Under Royal Decree 1155/2024, the national and the EU long-term residence permits each require, among other conditions, five years of legal, continuous residence before the application. For the EU long-term permit, time on a stay for studies, student mobility, volunteering or training counts at 50 percent, provided the applicant is resident in Spain when applying. The same regulation lists the duties of a foreign language assistant in registered Spanish schools among the training activities covered by that kind of stay.

What this article does not establish

It makes no statement about teacher shortages, whether teaching occupations are on the current catalogue of hard-to-fill occupations, how long procedures take in practice, what teachers are paid, what international schools require, or how the rules apply to EU, EEA or Swiss citizens. Regional administrations set their own calls and conditions, so check the ministry, the regional education office and the consulate before relying on any detail.
