For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

It depends on nationality: foreign nationals fall into three categories: nationals who do not require visas to enter Zambia; nationals requiring visas on arrival or from Missions Abroad; and nationals required to apply for visas before travel. The Department publishes a list of nationals who do not require visas. Anyone, regardless of nationality, can apply for an e-Visa.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

A Single Entry visa allows one entry, a Double Entry visa two entries and a Multiple Entry visa multiple entries during the validity of the visa; all three are valid for ninety (90) days from the date of first issuance. Visa validity is the period within which the holder must enter Zambia, not the period of stay. Ordinary visitors, business visitors and tourists are entitled to a free ninety (90) days visit in any period of twelve (12) months from the day of first entry; these days may not be given all at once.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

All arriving passengers need at least six months passport validity from the date of entry and at least 3 full blank pages. For a visa on arrival, the visitor must have full information of the host and a physical address for the stay. Non-citizens and non-residents arriving by air must hold valid return air tickets; those arriving by land and water must have enough funds for their stay in and departure from Zambia.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

Depending on nationality, visas are obtained on arrival at the port of entry, at Zambian Missions Abroad or before travel. e-Visas are applied for online through the Department's e-services (user account registration, Application for Visa (Form 16), document upload and credit or debit card payment); Multiple Entry Visas are issued only by Headquarters through the e-visa facility. Persons under 16 cannot apply for an e-Visa and must be included in the accompanying adult's application. Visitors may be required to have their visit days extended at the nearest Immigration Office, free of charge.
