For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

To stay beyond ninety (90) days, an ordinary visitor needs a Visiting Permit, which an immigration officer may issue on application made in writing to an ordinary visitor who would otherwise exceed ninety days in any period of twelve months.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

The Visiting Permit is valid for three (03) months and cannot be extended beyond nine (09) months within a period of twelve (12) months. It authorises the holder to enter and re-enter into and remain within Zambia until it expires.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

The required evidence is a letter of consent from the host supporting the application and stating the reason for the prolonged visit; proof of status of the host (national or permit holder); a certified copy of a valid passport (bio data and last endorsement stamp for Zambia); one recent passport-size photograph; and a copy of a return air ticket or proof of ability to return, e.g. the host's or applicant's bank statement.

Applications are made with a covering letter from the applicant addressed to the Director General of Immigration, plus the supporting documents and prescribed fee; the Department links an online application. Renewal/extension requires a covering letter from the applicant to the Director General of Immigration, a letter of consent from the host, proof of status of the host, a copy of a return air ticket and the prescribed fee.
