For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

No visa is required where exempted under an international treaty to which Vietnam is a party, or under a unilateral visa exemption decided by the Government for citizens of a specific country (decisions valid for no more than 5 years, may be extended).

A passport or international travel document is required; for entry under a unilateral visa exemption, the passport must be valid for at least 06 months. Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

No advance permission is needed for exempt travellers. Unilateral-exempt citizens may be considered for a visa or a stay extension under the Law. A foreigner staying in Vietnam who needs a new visa must ask an inviting/sponsoring agency, organisation or individual to apply at the immigration management authority or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs body.
