Sponsors screen and select their program participants according to the eligibility criteria for each program category. Some categories require that a personal interview be part of the screening and selection process. In addition to program-specific criteria, all participants must satisfy English language proficiency and insurance requirements. Sponsors are to provide participants with pre-arrival information prior to their departure from their home countries and an orientation upon their arrival in the United States. Sponsors are also required to monitor the progress and welfare of the participants for the duration of their programs.

What are the most important financial or study-related conditions: tuition, funds, insurance, full-time study, attendance or equivalent?

Participants must possess sufficient English proficiency to participate in their programmes and, with any J-2 dependants, must carry medical insurance at the minimum benefit levels stated in the programme regulations; willful failure to maintain active insurance is grounds for termination from the programme. Unless in a federally funded exchange programme, participants pay sponsor programme fees that vary by exchange category, sponsor’s programme and programme duration; the sponsor states whether a SEVIS I-901 fee must be paid to DHS or is already part of the programme fees.

Can the student work? Under what major restrictions? What is the family position where clearly stated?

An exchange visitor may receive compensation from the sponsor or the sponsor's appropriate designee, such as the host organisation, when employment activities are part of the exchange visitor's programme. An exchange visitor who engages in unauthorised employment is deemed to be in violation of programme status and is subject to termination as a participant in the exchange visitor programme. The spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21 may be able to apply for J-2 visas to accompany or join the participant for the duration of the J programme, if permitted in the exchange programme category, and minor children may attend school on J-2 visas. Acceptance of employment by the accompanying spouse and dependants is governed by Department of Homeland Security regulations.

How long does the status last, how is it renewed, and what officially documented post-study work or residence possibilities exist?

The programs enable foreign nationals to come to the U.S. to teach, study, conduct research, demonstrate special skills or receive on-the-job training for periods ranging from a few weeks to several years. The official source does not state renewal or extension rules or any post-programme work or residence option.
