What type of worker, employment situation, occupation or professional activity is this pathway actually designed for?

The I classification is for representatives of a foreign information media outlet (press, radio, film, or other foreign information media) who are coming to engage solely in this profession and have a home office in a foreign country, such as reporters, film crews, editors, and similar occupations. The applicant must be a bona fide representative of foreign media whose activities are essential to the functions of the organisation.

Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

Must represent a foreign information media outlet with a home office in a foreign country, as a bona fide representative whose activities are essential to the organisation. An I-status holder who wants to change employer or information medium must file Form I-539, accompanied by a letter from the employing foreign media organisation describing the employment.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

The permission allows media work for the same employer in the same information medium; a change of employer or medium requires Form I-539. The spouse and children under 21 may accompany but may not work; they may study without an F-1 visa.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

Holders are generally admitted for duration of status (D/S) with no extension needed while working for the same employer and medium; if the I-94 has an end date, they extend via Form I-539. PRC nationals (except Hong Kong/Macau SAR passports) are limited to 90 days, extendable in 90-day increments.
