The holder can work for their sponsor in the job described in the certificate of sponsorship, study, bring their partner and children as dependants if eligible, travel abroad and return, and do voluntary work, which must be unpaid and for a registered charity, a voluntary organisation, an associated fundraising body or a statutory body. They cannot apply for most benefits, public funds or the State Pension, change jobs unless eligible and updating the visa, have a second job unless they previously had an Intra-company Transfer visa or a Tier 2 (Intra-company Transfer) Long term Staff visa, or apply to settle permanently (indefinite leave to remain).

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

The permission is granted for whichever is shorter of the time on the certificate of sponsorship plus 14 days or 5 years. It can be extended as many times as desired up to the maximum total stay, which is 5 years in any 6-year period if paid less than £73,900 per year, or 9 years in any 10-year period if paid £73,900 or more. Time spent on certain other Global Business Mobility and predecessor visas counts towards the maximum. There is no maximum stay for those who have been in the UK since 6 April 2011 on specified visas.
