What type of worker, employment situation, occupation or professional activity is this pathway actually designed for?

The Health and Care Worker visa is designed for medical professionals coming to or staying in the UK to do an eligible job with the NHS, an NHS supplier or in adult social care. To qualify, the applicant must be a qualified doctor, nurse, health professional or adult social care professional, work in an eligible health or social care job, and work for a UK employer approved by the Home Office.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

The holder can work in an eligible job, take on additional work in certain circumstances, study, bring their partner and children as dependants if they meet the eligibility criteria, and travel abroad and return to the UK. Voluntary work is allowed only if it is unpaid and for a registered charity, a voluntary organisation, an associated fundraising body or a statutory body. The holder cannot change jobs or employer unless they update their visa, and cannot apply for most benefits (public funds) or the State Pension.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

The visa can last for up to 5 years before it needs to be extended. It can be extended as many times as needed as long as eligibility requirements are still met. After 5 years, the holder may be able to apply to settle permanently in the UK (indefinite leave to remain).
