What type of worker, employment situation, occupation or professional activity is this pathway actually designed for?

The Graduate Trainee visa is for coming to or staying in the UK to work for the applicant's employer in its UK branch, in an eligible job that is part of a graduate training programme for a managerial or specialist role.

Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

The applicant must be an existing employee of an organisation approved by the Home Office as a sponsor, have worked for the sponsor outside the UK for at least 3 months immediately before applying, and have a certificate of sponsorship from the employer with information about the work to be done in the UK.

The job must be on the list of eligible occupations and pay at least £27,300 per year. Applicants who are not on a graduate training programme are pointed instead to the Senior or Specialist Worker visa to work for their employer's UK branch.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

The permission allows the holder to work for the sponsor in the job described in the certificate of sponsorship, study, bring eligible partner and children as dependants, travel abroad and return to the UK, and do voluntary work. The holder cannot change jobs or do a second job.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

Permission is granted for whichever is shorter of the time on the certificate of sponsorship plus 14 days, or 12 months. The visa cannot be extended, but the holder can apply for another Graduate Trainee visa from outside the UK. Anyone who has spent time on the listed Global Business Mobility or intra-company visas can stay in the UK for a maximum of 5 years in any 6 year period.
