What type of worker, employment situation, occupation or professional activity is this pathway actually designed for?

The Freelancer work permit is one of three types of work permit, alongside Employed (Skilled and Unskilled) and Self Employed. The application may be submitted by the worker, does not need to meet the condition of failed recruitment of a Turks and Caicos Islander, and an employment contract must be given to the Employment Services Department after employment is found. The official source does not describe the type of worker or occupation the category is designed for.

Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

A freelancer's application may be submitted by the employee rather than requiring an employer submission, and an employment contract must be given to the Employment Services Department after employment is found.

What are the few decisive professional characteristics of the pathway: occupation, qualifications, experience, salary, skill level, shortage status, labour-market condition or equivalent?

Freelancer applications do not need to meet the condition of failed recruitment of a Turks and Caicos Islander. The Freelancer documents are a high school diploma, correspondence from a public secondary school showing at least five years' attendance, and birth certificates of the applicant, parents, grandparents and great-grandparents; an employment contract must be given to the Employment Services Department after employment is found.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

The Freelancer Work Permit may be applied for by the individual rather than a named employer. The official checklist says an employment contract must be given to the Employment Services Department after employment is found; it also lists an employment contract for renewal. The freelancer application form has endorsement fields for spouse and children. Endorsement is subject to category, sufficient family income and provision for children’s private-school registration; the current page lists a $150 administration fee plus $500 per endorsee. These sources do not establish permission to work for multiple employers or across occupations, or a work right for endorsed family members.

Limits of the record
  • The lack of a named employer at application follows from the direct-application rule and later-employment-contract instruction; the actual permit may impose restrictions not stated here. Family endorsement is conditional, and the work rights of endorsees are not established.

Can I apply for a work permit on my own? Only Self Employed Person’s and Freelancer’s work permit applications are eligible to be submitted by an employee. All other applications must be submitted by the employer or by agencies/firms accredited to do so on their behalf.

  • TC Border Control dependent endorsement policy and fees
How can I get an endorsement for my spouse or child or children? As a matter of policy, a spouse or child can only be on certain categories of work permits, and where it may be possible to do so, the applicant/employer has to demonstrate that the employee’s income is sufficient to support him/herself and family in the islands and provide for the registration of the children in a private school. Applications are submitted in the same manner as work permits. The fee structure is a $150.00 non-refundable administrative fee , as well as a non-refundable fee of $500 with respect to each endorsee . Both are to be paid upon application.
