For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm whether a visa, electronic authorisation or visa on arrival is normally required.

Limits of the record
  • Searched the Visitors Visa page (Beijing consular section) for which travellers must obtain a visa before travel. The page describes how to apply at the Embassy but never states who is required to hold a pre-arrival visa; the nationality matrix is on the visa-waiver page (other via). Old purpose material moved to R2.

What short-visit purposes does this route cover?

The Visitor's Visa covers leisure, short stays with family and friends, attending government events, workshops and conferences, and involvement in government aid projects. Holders of non-Tongan passports cannot take up employment, business or study on a visitor's visa; a person intending to set up a business may enter on a Visitor's Visa but must advise Tonga Immigration by letter, failing which a T$1,180.00 penalty applies.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

The visitor visa must remain valid at all times while in Tonga; staying without a valid visa can lead to prosecution, imprisonment or a fine under the Immigration Act. The official source does not state the maximum stay or validity length of a pre-arrival visitor visa.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

Applicants must provide an original passport valid within six months of the travel date, a return-ticket travel itinerary (to Tonga and to the country of residence), and evidence of sufficient funds for the stay or a sponsorship letter stating who bears the return ticket, accommodation, meals and incidentals.
