For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

What short-visit purposes does this route cover?

The Visa on Arrival covers tourism only: eligible nationals may apply for a Visa-On-Arrival allowing a stay of up to 15 days for tourism purposes. The official source does not extend it to business, study, work or family purposes.

  • TOURIST VISA EXEMPTION, 1. FOR VISIT OF UP TO 60 DAYS
Nationals of 93 countries and territories are eligible for visa exemption, permitting stays of up to 60 days for the purpose of tourism and short-term business engagements in Thailand. This stay can be extended for an additional period not exceeding 30 days, at the discretion of the immigration officer. Those who wish to extend their stay in Thailand for different purposes than the above are required apply for the appropriate visa type in Thailand before the end of the permitted period of stay. (Effective 15 July 2024)

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

The stay allowed is up to 15 days. The permission is tightly bounded at the other end as well: visitors who enter the Kingdom with a Visa on Arrival generally cannot file an application for extension of stay, except in special cases of illness that prevent them from travelling, in which case the application can be submitted at the Office of Immigration Bureau. The onward ticket must be usable within 30 days of the date of entry. The page states no rolling-period or per-year entry limit for Visa-on-Arrival, and the Cabinet's May 2026 revision changes the scheme once it takes effect.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

Permission is obtained on arrival, at Thailand's immigration checkpoints, by submitting the application form available at the designated ports of entry with the photo, funds evidence, passport and onward ticket, and paying 2,000 Baht in cash in Thai Baht. Extension is the exception rather than the rule: visitors who enter with a Visa on Arrival generally cannot file an application for extension of stay, except in special cases of illness which prevent them from travelling, when the application can be submitted at the Office of Immigration Bureau, whose website the Embassy gives. The 2026 revision approved by the Cabinet lets those already in Thailand, and those travelling before the effective date, stay until the expiry of their permitted period, after which they may enter under the new schemes, a bilateral exemption, or an appropriate visa applied for through Thailand's e-Visa system.

  • The revision of Thailand's visa exemption and VoA schemes, 2026
Foreigners who are already in Thailand under the current visa exemption schemes and those plan to travel to Thailand prior to the effective date of this revision may stay until the expiry of their permitted period of stay. Thereafter, they may enter Thailand under (1) the new visa schemes; (2) bilateral visa exemption agreements; or (3) an appropriate visa which can be conveniently applied through Thailand’s e-Visa system.
