For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

From 15 September 2026, Thailand's former 60-day exemption was revoked. The revised general exemption reviewed here is a 30-day tourism exemption for 60 countries and territories, with a separate 15-day tourism exemption for two countries/territories. The catalogue route should no longer describe this general scheme as a 60-day tourism-and-short-business exemption.

What short-visit purposes does this route cover?

The Embassy describes the 60-day exemption as covering tourism and short-term business engagements in Thailand, which is wider than tourism alone. The 90-day and 14-day bilateral exemptions are described more narrowly: nationals of those countries are not required to obtain a visa when entering Thailand for tourism purposes. Anyone who wishes to extend their stay for purposes other than those covered must apply for the appropriate visa type in Thailand before the end of the permitted period of stay.

    Nationals of 93 countries and territories are eligible for visa exemption, permitting stays of up to 60 days for the purpose of tourism and short-term business engagements in Thailand. What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

From 15 September 2026, the former 60-day stay with a discretionary 30-day extension no longer applies. The revised general tourism exemption allows up to 30 days for the current 60-country/territory list; bilateral passport-exemption agreements remain separate arrangements. The official source does not state a rolling-period rule or an extension rule for the revised exemption.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

Travellers entering under the tourist visa exemption schemes must possess adequate cash of, or equivalent to, 20,000 Baht per person or 40,000 Baht per family. The exemptions do not apply to foreigners holding a Travel Document for Aliens issued by the listed countries. The official source does not require accommodation proof, an invitation, insurance or an onward ticket for the exemption, and states no minimum passport validity for it.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

No permission is obtained in advance for the exemption itself; it applies on arrival for eligible nationalities. Under the scheme as stated, a 60-day stay can be extended for an additional period not exceeding 30 days at the discretion of the immigration officer, and anyone wanting to stay for a different purpose must apply for the appropriate visa type in Thailand before the permitted period ends. The Bandar Seri Begawan announcement adds the transition rule for the 2026 revision: foreigners already in Thailand under the current schemes, and those travelling before the effective date, may stay until the expiry of their permitted period of stay, and afterwards may enter under the new visa schemes, under bilateral visa exemption agreements, or with an appropriate visa applied for through Thailand's e-Visa system.
