Which exceptional-talent, academic, scientific, artistic, technological, cultural or other profiles does the pathway target?

SMART T is the talent category of Thailand's SMART Visa, run by the Board of Investment's One Stop Service Center. The official page defines two populations. The general case targets highly skilled professionals in the targeted industries, who must hold expertise in science and technology relevant to those industries. A second case covers experts working for a government agency, a higher education institution or a specialised training institution, and people entering Thailand to deliver Alternative Dispute Resolution services such as arbitration. The page states expressly that digital nomads and remote workers without a Thai employment or service link are not eligible for the SMART Visa. The page does not list which industries count as targeted.

The required level is established by three things in the general case: expertise in science and technology relevant to the targeted industries that is endorsed by an agency within the Strategic Talent Center (STC) network; an employment or service contract with an entity in Thailand whose remaining term is at least one year; and a minimum income of no less than 100,000 Baht per month or equivalent, reduced to no less than 50,000 Baht per month for experts holding an employment contract with a startup and for retired experts endorsed by a relevant agency. In the second case the expertise itself is certified instead by the hiring government agency, by the employing institution inside the STC network, or by an arbitration institute in Thailand. Is an employer, nominator, recognised body, peer group or government endorsement required?

Yes. Endorsement is the core of SMART T. In the general case the applicant's expertise in science and technology must be endorsed by an agency within the Strategic Talent Center (STC) network, and separately the Thai employer must itself be endorsed as engaged in the targeted industries by relevant government agencies, which the page illustrates with the National Innovation Agency (Public Organization) and the Digital Economy Promotion Agency. In the second case the endorsement comes from the hiring or employing government agency, from the employing higher education or specialised training institution inside the STC network, or, for Alternative Dispute Resolution work, from an arbitration institute in the country. Can the holder change employer, work independently, establish a business or conduct other professional activity? What is the family position?

The permission is tied to the endorsed employer, not free. No work permit is required for working in the endorsed companies in the general case, or with the entity or government agency in the second case, but a change of job requires additional endorsements under the relevant requirements. The holder also gets 90-day immigration reporting extended to one year at the One Stop Service Center, no re-entry permit, and fast-track service at Thai international airports where available. Spouse and children are granted permission to stay in Thailand for the same duration as the SMART Visa holder, and the spouse is granted permission to work with no work permit required. The page does not say whether the holder may run an independent business or work outside the endorsed role.

The official SMART T page states no permanent-residence or citizenship pathway, and does not describe the renewal application itself.
