What type of worker, employment situation, occupation or professional activity is this pathway actually designed for?

This route is for the foreign specialists, executives and investment staff that a company promoted by Thailand's Board of Investment brings in. The One Start One Stop Investment Center describes two strands: permission for foreign nationals to enter the Kingdom to assess investment opportunities, to perform any other act benefiting investment, or to work on a project that is in the process of being considered by the BOI; and permission to enter under Section 25 of the Investment Promotion Act, handled through the Single Window for Visa and Work Permit. The second strand is the working one: its application types are about approving positions, changing positions, adding job descriptions and stamping visas for approved staff.

  • The page states "Last updated November 2018" and cites the Office of Foreign Worker Administration "as of November 2018", so a rule changed after that date would not be visible in this source; recorded as doubt TH-D-20260913-21.

Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

The employer is central and must itself be BOI-promoted. It is the company that applies: the first approval of a position for a foreign national requires the company's organizational chart, a technology transfer plan, a shareholder list and an annual financial statement, and every page submitted must be stamped with the company's seal and signed by the authorised person. The BOI approves the position before the person: a foreigner seeking permission to work under the Investment Promotion Act must submit a work permit application within 30 days of notification by the BOI that the position has been approved. Applications go to the BOI's Foreign Expert Services Division, through the Single Window for Visa and Work Permit.

What are the few decisive professional characteristics of the pathway: occupation, qualifications, experience, salary, skill level, shortage status, labour-market condition or equivalent?

Two things distinguish this route from an ordinary Thai work permit. First, the position is approved by the BOI rather than tested against a labour market: the documents are about the company's structure, its shareholders, its financial statement and its technology transfer plan, not about a salary threshold or a shortage list, neither of which the page states. Second, the permission is faster and longer at the top end: a work permit is issued for one year for a regular position but for two years for an executive position or experts, and a foreigner in the Investment Promotion category may engage in authorised work while the application is being processed, which ordinary applicants may not.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

The work permitted is the approved position in the promoted company, and the holder is tied to it: permit holders must obtain prior permission to change their occupation or place of work, and a change of employment position for a foreign national is itself a separate application requiring the passport, educational qualifications, employment records and the company's chart, technology transfer plan, shareholder list and financial statement. Working without a permit is punished by imprisonment not exceeding five years or a fine from 2,000 Baht up to 100,000 Baht, or both. Family is provided for: permission to bring in a foreign national's family is one of the Section 25 application types, and a request for a family member's visa stamp requires the passport and a document showing family relations; the foreign national and their family may also be permitted to use the fast track lane.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

A work permit is issued for one year for a regular position and two years for an executive position or experts, and it must be renewed before its expiry date or it will lapse; on renewal the applicant must show that taxes for the previous year have been paid. Non-Immigrant visas for investment purposes run to two years where the investment has been authorised by the appropriate government authorities, and for investment under the Investment Promotion Act the duration is as determined by the BOI. Practical obligations continue throughout: a re-entry visa is needed before leaving, at 1,000 Baht single or 3,800 Baht multiple, and any foreigner residing more than 90 consecutive days must notify their address with the Immigration Bureau every 90 days; the One-Stop Service Center in Chamchuri Square handles these transactions. Permanent residence is mentioned on the page only as a general possibility under certain conditions, applied for at the Immigration Department.
