For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

A visitor’s residence permit is required for visits totalling 90 days or more, whether the person is currently outside Sweden or already in Sweden with a Schengen visa or as a visa-free person wanting to extend the stay to 90 days or longer, and for extending a visitor’s permit. Applicants outside Sweden must book an embassy or consulate-general appointment when applying.

What short-visit purposes does this route cover?

The stay must be only for visiting. Covered purposes: visiting a relative, friend or partner; tourism; business or conference visits (exceptional cases); self-employed persons with a business outside the EU on a temporary assignment in Sweden (owning 50 percent and holding a leadership role); and medical treatment (for the estimated treatment period, maximum one year). The permit does not allow work or settlement.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

Close relatives (sibling, child or grandchild) can stay a total of no more than six months, up to nine months on special grounds; parents no longer able to work visiting their child can get a permit for a total of one year; friends or partners (exceptional cases only) no more than six months; tourists no more than six months. The period is otherwise set case by case.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

Applicants need a passport valid at least three months after the visit ends, must intend to leave Sweden after the stay, and must show at least SEK 700 per day (bank statement, pay slip, employment certificate or a supporter’s documents). Individual medical travel insurance valid in Sweden is required for the whole stay (EUR 30,000 cover recommended), with exemptions such as EHIC/GHIC holders. Applicants from outside Sweden attach an invitation from the person they visit.
