University or university-college exchange students must use the higher-education residence-permit pathway instead.

  • Upper-secondary exchange scope
You can only get a residence permit for upper secondary school studies if it is an IB (International Baccalaureate) programme, or an international exchange arranged through an organization that promotes international student exchange.

If you are accepted for exchange studies at a university or university college, you should instead apply for a residence permit for higher education.

What type of institution/course must accept or enrol the applicant?

How long does the status last, how is it renewed, and what officially documented post-study work or residence possibilities exist?

The residence permit can be granted for at most one year and never beyond the passport’s validity. It can be extended. If it covers the full study period, the Swedish Migration Agency adds two weeks for the student to finish the studies and leave Sweden. The official source does not state post-study work or residence options.
