What type of worker, employment situation, occupation or professional activity is this pathway actually designed for?

This route is for workers offered seasonal employment, meaning fixed-term work that can only be carried out during a certain part of the year due to weather and other natural changes, common in agriculture, horticulture, hotels and restaurants, golf and ski resorts, tourism, and amusement and theme parks.

Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

Yes. The applicant must have an employment contract signed by both the applicant and the employer. The application may be rejected if the employer has previously failed to comply with its legal obligations to employees, or if the applicant previously breached the conditions of a seasonal work permit.

What are the few decisive professional characteristics of the pathway: occupation, qualifications, experience, salary, skill level, shortage status, labour-market condition or equivalent?

Salary must be at least on par with the minimum compensation for full-time work under Swedish collective agreements or what is customary in the profession or industry, even for part-time work; the worker must have access to an appropriate standard of housing; and qualifications must be proven where the work relates to a regulated profession.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

A granted permit carries the right to live and work in Sweden for as long as it is valid. Changing employer is possible but capped: a seasonal worker who gets a new job or changes employer can apply for a new seasonal work permit while still in Sweden, yet even with a change of employer cannot be granted permission to work for more than six months in any twelve-month period. The official source does not state whether family members may accompany a seasonal worker.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

A seasonal work permit can be granted for a maximum of nine months in a twelve-month period, as one long or several consecutive short permits, never longer than the passport is valid, and it can be extended. The worker must intend to leave Sweden when the permit expires.
