For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

From 1 July 2022 Suriname applies a unilateral visa abolition for certain countries. It does not apply (as of 1 May 2023) to nationals of the Dominican Republic, India, Venezuela, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Angola, Ghana, Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria, Zambia, South Africa, Eritrea, Somalia, Egypt, Tunisia, Cuba and Syria. The measure also covers nationals of countries with a visa-abolition agreement, and under it all nationals must pay the Entry Fee to be admitted.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

In general a foreign national needs a travel document valid at least 6 months, a completed Immigration Customs Form, a valid visa/Entry Fee voucher/attestation or a PSA card, an international yellow fever vaccination certificate if coming from a yellow fever risk country, and travel expenses of at least USD 25 per day or proof of sufficient means for the stay; not all documents are required depending on purpose and visa arrangements. Entry may be refused without sufficient means to cover the stay and travel to a place outside Suriname.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

The Entry Fee (USD 50 or EUR 50, excluding the VFS Global service fee of USD 8 or EUR 8) must be paid on every entry; since 1 January 2023 it is paid online via VFS Global, and the voucher is issued electronically as a PDF by email. Physical payment is possible at the Consulate General in Cayenne and the dependency in Saint Laurent (from French Guiana) and at the Canawaima Management Company, South Drain, Nickerie (from Guyana). A foreigner admitted is granted a short stay of a maximum of 30 days, which may be extended by a maximum of 60 days by the Aliens Department (Aliens Police).

Limits of the record
  • The captures do not state conditions for changing status in-country from a tourism/family visit.
  • The guide's general 30-day short stay (extendable by 60 days) is not expressly reconciled with the 90-day visa-free stay on the travel page.
