For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

A visa-required foreign national intending to stay in Suriname longer than three months must obtain a "machtiging tot kortverblijf" (MKV, short-stay authorisation) from a Surinamese embassy or consulate in their country of origin before travelling. Persons of Surinamese origin (PSA) are exempt from the MKV requirement, as are nationals of countries with which Suriname has a visa-waiver agreement.

What short-visit purposes does this route cover?

Per the MKV (Short Stay) eVisa categories of the Government's official and authorised partner portal: Family Reunion (reuniting with immediate family members who are citizens or legal residents), Concubine (unmarried partner of a Surinamese citizen or legal resident), Labour (employment or contractual work in Suriname), Study (academic courses, education or training programmes), Medical Reasons (medical treatment or health-related procedures) and Remigration (returning to Suriname after a prolonged stay abroad under re-immigration eligibility). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs page states that visa-required foreigners intending to stay in Suriname longer than three (3) months must apply for an MKV (machtiging tot kortverblijf) at the Surinamese Embassy or Consulate in their country of origin (article 3 Vreemdelingenwet 1991 with article 12 Vreemdelingenbesluit 1995).

Limits of the record
  • The grouping of the six purposes under 'Short Stay (MKV)' comes from the navigation menu of the VFS Global portal (self-described official and authorized partner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs), not from a gov.sr text; gov.sr does not list MKV purposes.
  • The VFS portal labels country eligibility as 'Short Stay, 90 Days' while gov.sr describes the MKV as for intended stays longer than three (3) months; the two are not reconciled in the sources.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

An MKV is required specifically because the traveller intends to stay in Suriname longer than three months; the official source does not state the MKV's own validity period or a separate maximum stay figure once granted.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

The documents required for an MKV application are the same as those required for a residence permit application: a request letter to the Minister of Justice and Police, a SRD 1.50 stamp, a copy of the passport's biographical pages, proof of means of income, and a USD 150 deposit or its SRD equivalent.

  • gov.sr, Verblijfsvergunningen, required documents for a residence permit application

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

The MKV is applied for at the Surinamese Embassy or Consulate in the applicant's country of origin, before travelling to Suriname. Because the application is already made abroad, the subsequent review of the residence permit in Suriname can reportedly be handled faster and through a simpler procedure.
