How far back can the qualifying connection extend, and what important transmission limitations exist?

Dual citizenship is applicable to a person whose Sri Lankan citizenship has ceased under section 19, 20 or 21 of the Citizenship Act, No 18 of 1948, or is likely to cease; it extends to the spouse or an unmarried child under the age of 22 years of such an applicant (Category 1.G), with child applications submitted before completing 21 years and 06 months, and eligible spouses or children are limited to persons whose Sri Lankan citizenship has ceased under section 19, 20 or 21 or is likely to cease.

Limits of the record
  • Rules describe eligibility for dual citizenship, on which the visa exemption rests, not the exemption itself.

What records are central to proving the lineage or historical connection?

For the dual citizenship on which the exemption rests, central records are the applicant's original birth certificate or a certified copy (for a citizen by registration, the relevant certificate or a copy); a resumption applicant also submits a certified copy of the foreign citizenship certificate; a child born outside Sri Lanka submits the consular birth certificate and the citizenship certificate issued under section 5(2) of the Citizenship Act.

Limits of the record
  • Documents are for the dual-citizenship application, not proof presented for the visa exemption.

Does the pathway result in a visa, residence permit, right of return, citizenship or another status?

The result is a visa exemption, not a residence visa: eligible dual citizens may enter and stay in Sri Lanka without holding any visa at all.

What application progression, residence obligations, family consequences or further citizenship/residence possibilities follow?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm what follows after the status is granted, including progression, residence obligations and family effects.

These are the answers currently recorded in the catalogue. A missing or partial answer is not an eligibility decision.
