What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

The Classes of Visa schedule under section 17 of the Immigration Act 2012 prescribes a 'Refugee protection visa' class and a 'Protected person re-entry visa' class (each with a maximum duration of 2 years); the official source does not describe how the protection mechanism works.

Limits of the record
  • The source is only a list of visa classes; it does not say whether refugee protection is asylum, resettlement or another mechanism.
  • No class literally named 'Protected Person Visa' is listed; the schedule has 'Protected person re-entry visa' and 'Refugee protection visa'.

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

People seeking protection because of a well-founded fear of persecution, serious harm or other risks in their home country (asylum seekers), and people granted refugee status under international humanitarian law or regional protection agreements.

Limits of the record
  • The catalogue name matches no single official page: the Classes of Visa list separately names refugee protection, trafficked person and protected person re-entry visas.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

Asylum applications go through an official ministerial process, often with help from legal or international humanitarian organisations; refugees are usually referred through the asylum process. The official source does not state whether the request is made at the border or in-country.

Limits of the record
  • Whether the request can be made at the border or in-country is not stated.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

During the asylum stage, validity depends on the investigation, court proceedings or asylum claim; there is no extension, no multiple entry and no right to work. The official source does not state registration steps, family handling or support.
