What type of worker, employment situation, occupation or professional activity is this pathway actually designed for?

This route is temporary residence for the purpose of employment, granted to a third-country national based on a confirmation of the possibility to fill a vacancy.

Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

An employer is required: the application includes the employer's written promise to employ or a contract of employment. Residence may also be granted based on an employment permit, or to a person who needs neither an employment permit nor a vacancy confirmation. For intra-corporate transfer, residence may be granted for a maximum of three years for a managing employee or specialist and one year for an employee-grantee.

What are the few decisive professional characteristics of the pathway: occupation, qualifications, experience, salary, skill level, shortage status, labour-market condition or equivalent?

Applicants under Art 23(1) submit a decision recognising their academic qualification or, for a regulated profession, a document attesting highest education (except elementary). Residence for employment is not required for up to 90 days in listed cases, such as working for an important foreign investor or delivering goods/services under a commercial contract with installation, repair, set-up, programming or training work not exceeding 90 days a year.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

Temporary residence is cancelled if its purpose has ceased, but not within 60 days from termination of employment; it is also cancelled if the holder performs a different activity than the one granted, unless listed provisions provide otherwise. Family members of a third-country national with temporary residence may be granted temporary residence for family reunification.

Limits of the record
  • The captured sources do not state whether the holder may change employer.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

Residence is granted for the assumed duration of employment, for a maximum of five years. It may be renewed, even repeatedly, if the purpose persists and conditions continue to be met, for up to five years if the assumed residence lasts at least five years; on renewal the police department requests a new vacancy confirmation from the Labour Office. Long-term residence is granted after at least 5 years of uninterrupted legal residence in Slovakia.
