Which family relationships qualify?

A family member is a third-country national who is the Union citizen's: spouse; child under 21 or dependent child (also of the spouse); dependent relative in the direct descending or ascending line (also of the spouse); other family member dependent in the country of origin, member of the household, or dependent on care for serious medical reasons; partner in a lasting, duly attested relationship; or a third-country national returning to Slovakia with a Slovak citizen from another Member State where they lived.

Who may sponsor or bring the family member, and what immigration/citizenship status must that person hold?

The sponsor is the Union citizen exercising residence rights in Slovakia; the applicant must document the family relationship (e.g. marriage or birth certificate) and the sponsor’s registration of residence.

What is important for proving marriage, partnership, parentage, custody, dependency or another qualifying relationship?

The family relationship with the Union-citizen sponsor must be documented, for example by a marriage certificate or birth certificate. Public documents issued abroad must be legalised (apostille or consular legalisation) and translated into Slovak by a certified translator, or translated into Czech. The family member must apply to the Foreign Police for a residence card within 30 days after the expiration of three months from the date of entry to Slovakia.

What important financial, accommodation, insurance or maintenance responsibilities apply?

Proof of accommodation may be given by a notarised affidavit of all property owners, electronic consent via the official e-service, a notarised tenancy agreement naming the applicant, or confirmation from an accommodation facility; if none is submitted, the police record the municipality where the family member will stay as the address. The official source does not state a financial-means, maintenance or health-insurance requirement for the family member.

The residence card is issued within 30 days of application, valid for five years or for the sponsor's expected stay if shorter; the holder becomes eligible for permanent residence after continuously residing with the sponsor for five years (less if the sponsor already qualifies for permanent residence).
