What type of worker, employment situation, occupation or professional activity is this pathway actually designed for?

This is a visa D issued for employment, for foreigners coming to work in Serbia who are subject to a visa regime or need a visa D. The employment grounds include employment under an employment contract or other Labour Law contract (narrow sense), self-employment, referred persons (business and technical cooperation), movement within the company, independent professionals, training and development, accredited foreign journalists, projects with state authorities, and audio-visual work crews.

Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

The employer relationship defines the employment ground: the ground follows from the contract held and the type of employer offering employment. Examples are an employment contract (or a draft) or other labour-law contract concluded with the employer, or employment abroad with the employer assigning the person for a specified period to a Serbian employer under a business and technical cooperation contract. The employer may submit the request on the foreigner's behalf with an authorisation or power of attorney.

What are the few decisive professional characteristics of the pathway: occupation, qualifications, experience, salary, skill level, shortage status, labour-market condition or equivalent?

The decisive feature is the single employment ground chosen (only one may be chosen), each with its own professional conditions: e.g. narrow-sense employment requires a diploma or certificate of the required professional qualification; intra-corporate transfer requires at least one year of prior employment abroad in managerial or specialist positions; independent professionals need a higher-education or technical qualification diploma from an accredited institution and a certificate of work experience in the profession.

  • No salary threshold, skill level or shortage-occupation list is stated for the visa D.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

A D visa issued on the basis of employment serves as a work permit and allows the holder to start working immediately on arrival; it is simultaneously a permit for residence and work in Serbia during the validity of the visa. The stay must fit the ground on which the visa was obtained. The official source does not state whether family may accompany the holder.

When issuing a long-stay visa on the basis of employment, the organization responsible for employment issues submits to the competent authority an assessment of the fulfilment of the conditions for employment in the Republic of Serbia, which creates the conditions for a long-stay visa on the basis of employment to be simultaneously a permit for residence and work in the Republic of Serbia, during the validity period of the visa.

It is important that you choose the right visa ground as it defines the documents you need to submit. Also, your stay in Serbia must fit the grounds for obtaining a visa.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

The employment D visa allows stay and work for a maximum of 180 days. To stay longer in the same employment, the holder must apply for a single temporary residence and work permit, whose validity term is three years; an extension request can be submitted until the expiry date of the previously valid permit.
