What type of worker, employment situation, occupation or professional activity is this pathway actually designed for?

The permit is for crew members of San Marino vessels hired under a regular employment contract under Articles 3 and 4 of Delegated Decree of 3 July 2008 n.103; where required by the rules in force, they must hold a special seafarers' stay permit issued by the Gendarmeria - Foreigners Office.

Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

Crew members of San Marino vessels must be hired under a regular employment contract under Articles 3 and 4 of Delegated Decree of 3 July 2008 n.103; the permit may be requested either by the shipowner ('armatore') or by the seafarer.

Limits of the record
  • The regular employment-contract requirement appears in Art. 11(1), cited for R1; no further employer conditions are stated

What are the few decisive professional characteristics of the pathway: occupation, qualifications, experience, salary, skill level, shortage status, labour-market condition or equivalent?

The Gendarmeria and/or the competent public offices, together with the Civil Aviation and Maritime Navigation Authority, check that the crew of the vessel for which the permit is requested is proportionate to the vessel's size and type. The official source does not state an occupation, qualification, experience or salary criterion for the seafarer.

Limits of the record
  • No occupation, qualification, experience or salary criterion for the seafarer is stated

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

The permit is valid only for the navigation activity under the specific employment contract, and cannot be converted into another type of permit; it therefore does not grant broader work rights beyond that seafaring role. The official source does not state whether family may accompany.

  • Art. 11(3)
Il permesso di soggiorno di cui al presente articolo è valido solo per lo svolgimento dell’attività di navigazione di cui al contratto di lavoro e non può essere trasformato in altri tipi di permessi.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

The maritime special permit lasts a maximum of twelve months per year and may be renewed, but can never exceed the duration of the underlying employment contract; the 2026 migration-flow decree caps the number of these permits at five for that year.
