What education or training is this pathway designed for?

This route covers long-term study visas/residence for students, master's students and doctoral candidates at a public or private higher education institution accredited according to law, including foreigners accepted under international agreements to which Romania is a party.

The visa is also granted to foreigners accepted for studies based on international documents to which Romania is a party.

What type of institution/course must accept or enrol the applicant?

The applicant must be accepted, as certified by the Ministry of Education, into a full-time course of study at a state or private higher education institution, accredited or provisionally authorised according to law.

What are the most important financial or study-related conditions: tuition, funds, insurance, full-time study, attendance or equivalent?

For the study visa the applicant must prove payment of tuition fees for at least one year of study, means of support of at least the national minimum gross salary for the entire period on the visa, and travel medical insurance covering the whole stay, medical repatriation, emergency medical treatment or hospitalisation or death, valid throughout the Member States, with minimum coverage of EUR 30,000. To extend the residence right, means of support of at least the minimum gross salary for at least 6 months must be shown.

How long does the status last, how is it renewed, and what officially documented post-study work or residence possibilities exist?

The right of residence may be extended for a period equal to the total duration of studies. The residence permit is renewed at least 30 days before the expiry of the previous one. After graduation, the right of temporary residence for studies may be extended to a maximum of 6 months to complete the school or university situation and authenticate study papers; a separate general clause allows a further 9-month extension after graduation for job search, employment or business-opening formalities.
