What education or training is this pathway designed for?

The D/SD visa is for third-country nationals travelling to Romania for pre-graduate, graduate or postgraduate studies, or to obtain academic degrees within state or accredited private institutions.

A higher-education student must show acceptance for a full-time course at an accredited or provisionally authorised institution, proof of payment of the tuition fee for at least one year, means of support of at least the minimum gross national salary guaranteed in monthly payment for the entire visa period, and travel medical insurance valid throughout the Member States with minimum coverage of EUR 30,000. Foreign scholarship holders of the Romanian state or state university educational institutions are not required to prove payment of tuition fees and means of support.

How long does the status last, how is it renewed, and what officially documented post-study work or residence possibilities exist?

The long-stay visa is granted for 90 days, with one or more entries, after which the student must obtain a residence permit. The right of residence may be extended for the total duration of studies plus 3 months; by up to 6 months after graduation to complete the university situation and authenticate study documents; by up to one year for students who have not graduated in the initial period, to complete their studies; and for 9 months after graduation for job search and employment or business-opening formalities, with documents attesting completion of studies.
