What education or training is this pathway designed for?

The D/CS long-stay visa is for third-state nationals intending to conduct scientific research in Romania.

What type of institution/course must accept or enrol the applicant?

The host must be a research-and-development unit or institution certified under the law, which requests the Ministry of Research and Innovation endorsement and has a hosting agreement with the researcher accepted to carry out activities within a scientific research project.

For an extension, the researcher needs a hosting agreement with the Romanian host entity endorsed by the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digitalisation, and means of support of at least the guaranteed minimum gross basic national salary for at least 6 months. Researchers may carry out teaching activities under the law. Researchers holding a right of stay for scientific research may request family reunification even if their residence permit is valid for less than one year.

How long does the status last, how is it renewed, and what officially documented post-study work or residence possibilities exist?

The right of residence is extended for the duration of the hosting agreement but no more than 5 consecutive years; it may be extended by 9 months after research ends to look for work or open a business, with later extensions under the commercial-activity or employment rules without a new long-stay visa.
