What education or training is this pathway designed for?

Scientific research: for researchers admitted to collaborate in an officially recognised research centre, e.g. through an employment contract, service contract, research grant or hosting agreement.

How long does the status last, how is it renewed, and what officially documented post-study work or residence possibilities exist?

The researcher residence permit is valid for two years, renewable for equal periods, or lasts for the duration of the hosting agreement if shorter than two years. For researchers covered by EU or multilateral programmes that include mobility measures, it is two years or the hosting-agreement duration if shorter, except where the researcher did not meet the conditions of Article 62 at the time of grant, in which case it lasts one year.
