One of these must be met: the mother or father resided in Portugal in the last 5 years (with or without a residence permit), or the mother or father resides legally in Portugal, or the minor attended at least 1 year of pre-school, basic, secondary or vocational education in Portugal.

The child must be under 18, born in Portugal and a child of foreigners; if aged 16 or 17, the child must not have been sentenced to 3 or more years of prison for a crime punishable in Portugal nor be involved in terrorism. Required: birth certificate, request addressed to the Minister of Justice, proof of one of the qualifying conditions and, if 16 or 17, criminal record. It can be requested online through a lawyer or solicitor, in person, or by post; the request is free of charge.
