What type of worker, employment situation, occupation or professional activity is this pathway actually designed for?

The pathway is designed for third-country nationals and stateless persons with high professional qualifications who intend to work in a profession requiring specialised knowledge, skills and competences acquired during higher education or professional experience. IT sector employees most often apply, but experts, specialists and senior employees from various industries may also obtain it.

    Temporary residence permit for the purpose of performing work in a high-qualification profession is intended for foreigners who intend to work in a profession for which specialised knowledge, skills and competences are necessary, acquired during higher education or on the basis of professional experience.

Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

Yes. The applicant needs an employer: Annex 1 to the application is filled in by the employer, and the conditions for entrusting work specified in Annex 1 must be current on the date the permit is issued and consistent with other documents such as the employment contract. The applicant presents a written contract under which they perform work, provide services or have a business relationship in a profession requiring higher qualifications, concluded for at least 6 months (employment contract, contract for outwork, or civil law contract such as a contract of mandate or for specific work).

What are the few decisive professional characteristics of the pathway: occupation, qualifications, experience, salary, skill level, shortage status, labour-market condition or equivalent?

The decisive professional characteristics are: work in a highly qualified profession requiring specialised knowledge, skills and competences; higher professional qualifications confirmed by higher education (at least 3-year cycle) or 5 years of professional experience (3 years for certain listed professions); an employment contract or civil law contract for at least 6 months; and annual gross remuneration not lower than 150% of the average remuneration in the national economy (in 2026, not less than PLN 160,264.08).

In the case of applications submitted in 2026. skumulowane remuneration brutto must not be less than 160,264.08 PLN, which means receiving a monthly gross amount above 13,355.34 PLN.

    the foreigner has higher professional qualifications necessary to perform work in the given profession; Higher professional qualifications are knowledge and skills acquired: thanks to higher education; ⇒ It concerns at least a 3-year cycle of higher education studies successfully completed at a university recognised in the country in which it is based. What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

The permission allows work in Poland in a highly qualified occupation for a remuneration not lower than that required for granting the permit. If the holder changes employer, they are obliged to notify the governor, and the permit will not be revoked as long as they comply with the notification obligation. Certain members of the family are entitled to obtain a temporary residence permit for family reunification.

    Limited access to the Polish labour market ⇒ You may perform work in Poland, in a highly qualified occupation, for a remuneration not lower than that required for the granting of this permit. ⇒ If you change your employer, you are obliged to communicate this change to the governor. ⇒ If you lose your job, you are entitled to: 3 months of unemployment, provided that 2 years have not passed since the authorisation was granted; 6 months of unemployment if you have lost employment after 2 years of Blue Card residency. The permit will not be revoked as long as you comply with the notification obligation.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

Granted for a period 3 months longer than the period of performing work, from more than 6 months to 3 years. It is not renewed automatically: before expiry the holder must apply for a residence permit if the requirements are met. The Blue Card system gives faster acquisition of EU long-term resident status; Blue Card stays in other EU countries can be aggregated, provided the last 2 years immediately before applying are spent in Poland on this basis.
