What type of worker, employment situation, occupation or professional activity is this pathway actually designed for?

Workers with at least vocational training at upper-secondary level, a trade certificate, higher education from a university college or university, or special qualifications.

Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

A concrete job offer is required, as a main rule for full-time work for one employer (exceptions possible after assessment of the position); a permit may be granted even if the concrete full-time offer is not continuous.

What are the few decisive professional characteristics of the pathway: occupation, qualifications, experience, salary, skill level, shortage status, labour-market condition or equivalent?

The competence must be relevant to the position; approval or authorisation from the relevant professional authority is required in regulated occupations; the worker must fall within the skilled-worker quota, or, if no quota is set or it is full, the position must be unfillable by domestic or EEA/EFTA labour. Pay and working conditions must be no worse than the collective agreement or pay scale for the industry, or otherwise what is normal for the place and occupation; the applicant must be 18 or older.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

A skilled-worker permit under the main rule can be granted for three years (permits under the provision's second paragraph are granted for one year). Renewal for the same type of work is possible even with a change of employer; a renewed permit may be granted for up to two years ahead. The permit forms a basis for permanent residence.
