What type of worker, employment situation, occupation or professional activity is this pathway actually designed for?

Temporary residence for work has three purposes: employment of a foreigner, seasonal employment of a foreigner and posted workers; this route is the first, general employment of a foreigner, and also covers self-employment of a foreigner. A foreigner may work in North Macedonia on the basis of a decision granting temporary residence for work.

Does the applicant need a job offer, employer, sponsor, transfer relationship or other employer involvement? What is important about that employer relationship?

Temporary residence for work is granted on application by the foreigner, by the legal entity with which the foreigner is to conclude an employment contract, or by its authorised representative, and the application may also be filed with the Ministry of Interior. For the Employment Agency opinion, evidence of the employing entity's registration in the Central Register of North Macedonia and a signed employment contract between employer and foreigner are required.

The employer must justify the need to employ the foreigner, show a worker-mediation request no older than 30 days, and provide evidence of the foreigner's relevant education or specific vocational training.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

A holder may perform only the work for which temporary residence was approved. The official source does not state whether family members may accompany the holder.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

The Employment Agency opinion is issued for the requested period up to one year; if no period is stated, the initial opinion is six months. An extension request must be made while the prior opinion is valid and no earlier than 30 days before expiry. The official source does not state a longer-term residence direction.
