For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

A visa is normally required: every person must hold a valid visa to travel to Niue unless exempt from the visa requirement under the Act or holding a valid residence permit. New Zealand citizens born in Niue need no visa.

Limits of the record
  • The nationalities or classes exempted by Cabinet regulation are not in the captured text, so no nationality matrix can be given.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

The Act defines a visitor as a person entering Niue for a period not exceeding 30 days with a valid passport or travel document (dependant family members included). Each visa states its expiry date and whether it is valid for single or multiple entry, and a temporary permit allows a stay for the period stated on it.

Limits of the record
  • The 30-day figure is in the definition of "visitor"; the Act does not expressly set it as the maximum of the visitor visa or of the permit.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

On arrival a person must produce their own valid passport or certificate of identity, a completed arrival card and any documentation the card or an Immigration Officer requires. Visa and permit holders must hold a passport valid at least six months after their visa or permit expires. Every temporary-permit application must include at least two character references, a police report and health clearances from the home country, and any other information the Chief Immigration Officer requires. The applicant must pay a monetary bond before any temporary permit is granted. If the temporary entry guidelines require it, the applicant needs an acceptable sponsor, who may have to undertake to provide accommodation and maintenance.

Limits of the record
  • The Act does not state an onward-ticket, funds or insurance requirement for visitors.
  • The temporary entry guidelines that decide when a sponsor is required were not captured.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

A person needing a visa applies on the relevant form to the appropriate office with any fee. On arrival, the person must immediately apply to the Immigration Officer at an Immigration Place for a temporary permit (unless exempt or holding a residence permit). A valid temporary permit holder may apply in Niue to the Chief Immigration Officer, with any fee, for a further temporary permit, and must apply for a different visa or permit if an intended activity is not allowed on the one held.
