For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

It depends on nationality category and passport type: Category A nationals, with any type of passport, do not need an entry visa; Category B nationals, depending on the type of passport they hold, need a visa issued at any Nicaraguan consulate abroad or a visa issued by the Directorate General of Migration and Immigration at the border post; Category C nationals, depending on the passport type, need a consulted visa authorised by the Directorate General of Migration and Immigration. The list of countries that do or do not require a visa is defined by the Ministry of the Interior through the Directorate General of Migration and Immigration. The official source does not state which nationalities fall in each category.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

Consulted visas are granted only by the Directorate General of Migration and Immigration; Nicaraguan diplomatic missions and consulates abroad that receive visa applications forward them through the Consular Directorate General of the Ministry of the Interior. Non-residents may not carry out paid activities, except those authorised by the Ministry of the Interior due to special circumstances, such as artists, sportspeople, members of public shows, temporary workers and business people; the fee for authorising a non-resident to work is $CA 25.00 per month for a maximum of one year. An extension of stay of one to thirty days costs $CA 25.00. The official source does not state the circumstances in which an extension is granted.
