For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

People travelling on a passport from some countries must apply for a Visitor Visa. Some people can travel on an NZeTA instead of a visa. Australian citizens travelling on an Australian passport need neither a Visitor Visa nor an NZeTA.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

Either a multiple-entry or a single-entry visa is issued based on the assessment of the application, and the maximum stay is 9 months in an 18-month period. A multiple-entry visa allows visits as many times as wanted while the visa is valid, staying up to a total of 6 months in each 12-month period; a single-entry visa allows one entry and a stay of up to 9 months in an 18-month period.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

Applicants must have enough money to live on in New Zealand or an acceptable sponsor; self-funded applicants need at least NZD $1,000 a month, or NZD $400 a month if accommodation is already paid. They must be able to show they plan to leave at the end of their stay, and every time they travel to New Zealand they must have a ticket to leave or proof of money to buy one, unless the visa states 'Return/onward travel not required'. Full medical insurance for the stay is recommended.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

From 1 October 2026, applications for this visa must be submitted through Immigration New Zealand's enhanced Immigration Online system. A visitor already in New Zealand who needs more time for a genuine reason can apply to extend the visit by applying for a new Visitor Visa before the current visa expires; if approved, the new Visitor Visa is single-entry.
