For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

People taking part in Tourism New Zealand's Visiting Media Programme apply for the Visiting Media Visitor Visa. Travellers from a visa waiver country do not need a visa to visit New Zealand for a month as part of a visiting media programme, but must hold a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before they travel.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

The visa allows a visit of 1 month. If there are no multiple entry travel conditions and the holder leaves New Zealand, the visa expires. The holder must leave New Zealand before the visa expires; to stay longer than a month, a work visa is required. The official source does not state a rolling-period rule or the validity period of the visa for entry.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

The applicant must provide an invitation from Tourism New Zealand or a letter of introduction from New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE). The applicant needs at least NZD $1,000 per month, or NZD $400 per month if accommodation is already paid, or an acceptable sponsor; evidence can include proof of accommodation pre-payment and bank statements. The applicant must have a ticket to leave New Zealand or enough funds to buy one, or be sponsored for onward travel, and may be asked to show this on arrival. The passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the planned departure. Full medical insurance for the length of the visit is recommended.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

The visa is applied for online; from 1 October 2026 applications must be submitted through Immigration New Zealand's enhanced Immigration Online system. Travellers from a visa waiver country instead need an NZeTA before travelling. A holder who wants to stay longer than a month or do any other work must apply for a work visa.
