What education or training is this pathway designed for?

Full-time study on an approved course, including schools, tertiary and English language study, for students funded by a New Zealand scholarship administered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) or Education New Zealand (ENZ); short-term study of less than 3 months requires a Visitor Visa instead.

What type of institution/course must accept or enrol the applicant?

An offer of a place on a course by an approved education provider, with the offer confirming tuition fees will be paid by MFAT; where children will study for more than 2 weeks, their provider must be a signatory to the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021.

What are the most important financial or study-related conditions: tuition, funds, insurance, full-time study, attendance or equivalent?

Tuition fees and living costs must be paid by an MFAT-funded New Zealand scholarship; the student must study full-time, attend the course at the approved provider and make satisfactory progress; a further visa of this type requires continued MFAT funding.

Can the student work? Under what major restrictions? What is the family position where clearly stated?

Students under Commonwealth Scholarships, New Zealand Regional Development Scholarships, New Zealand Pacific Scholarships or the New Zealand ASEAN Scholars Award can work up to 25 hours a week during the academic year and full-time during the Christmas-New Year holiday period; students under Short-Term Training Scholarships or English Language Training for Officials Scholarships cannot work; self-employment is not allowed. Partner and dependent children cannot be included in the application; depending on the scholarship programme the partner may be eligible for a work visa for the length of the scholarship, and dependent children may be eligible for student visas.

How long does the status last, how is it renewed, and what officially documented post-study work or residence possibilities exist?

Stay of up to 4 years. After completing the scholarship the student must return home and stay there for at least 2 years (at least 1 year for Short-Term Training or English Language Training for Officials Scholarships of 12 months or less); another visa can only be granted in that 2-year period with written approval from MFAT or Education New Zealand, although a short-term Visitor Visa (from outside New Zealand) or a work visa for the minimum time needed to complete practical work requirements may be granted.
