  • Requirements
You are coming to the Netherlands for cultural exchange. The main purpose is to get to know Dutch society and culture. You may complete a short study or course during the exchange.
  • The residence permit - Working with the residence permit
Occasional work means that you are allowed to work only to financially support your stay in the Netherlands. Then your employer does not need a work permit (in Dutch: tewerkstellingsvergunning or TWV) for you. You may, for example work fulltime, but not the whole year for the same employer. Nor may you work as a self-employed person.

What are the defining limitations: quota, ballot, previous participation, employer limits, study limits or equivalent?

The applicant must not previously have had a residence permit in the Netherlands and must meet the requirements of their country's Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) or Note Verbale (for example, living in the country of nationality when applying). No work permit is required for occasional work while on WHP/WHS, and other work is not permitted. The official source does not state a quota for Australia.

Limits of the record
  • The IND page states annual maximums only for Argentina, Uruguay, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea; it states none for Australia, so whether a quota or ballot applies to Australia is not confirmed.
  • Employer and study limits (not the whole year for the same employer; short study or course) are proven in the R2 answer of this via and are not repeated here.

What funds, insurance, onward travel or similar preparation is particularly important?

The applicant must have a return ticket or be able to show enough money to buy one; must have enough money during the stay in the Netherlands (the applicant must estimate how much is needed) and may not receive social benefits from Dutch public funds; and must have insurance that covers the cost of healthcare in the Netherlands.
