What type of institution/course must accept or enrol the applicant?

A university or HBO institution that the IND recognises as a sponsor. The student needs proof of registration, and the programme must be accredited by NVAO or EQAR. Only the institution can apply.

What are the most important financial or study-related conditions: tuition, funds, insurance, full-time study, attendance or equivalent?

Full-time enrolment, meeting the income requirements, and sufficient study progress: at least 50% of the credits in each study year, as assessed by the institution. The official source does not state tuition or health insurance requirements.

Can the student work? Under what major restrictions? What is the family position where clearly stated?

Employed work needs a TWV held by the employer and is limited to either up to 16 hours a week or full-time in June, July and August. Self-employed work is unlimited, with Chamber of Commerce registration. The institution can apply for family members, but family members are not allowed to work in the Netherlands.

How long does the status last, how is it renewed, and what officially documented post-study work or residence possibilities exist?

The permit is issued for at most 5 years, valid for the length of study (including any preparatory period) plus 3 months, and can be extended. After studies the holder can apply for a permit to look for a job after study, to work as a highly skilled migrant under a lower income requirement, or to work as a start-up entrepreneur.
