Which exceptional-talent, academic, scientific, artistic, technological, cultural or other profiles does the pathway target?

Researchers from outside the EU, EEA or Switzerland conducting research at a Dutch research institute, as a paid researcher, an unpaid researcher with a grant, or a doctoral (PhD) candidate; also researchers holding a Directive permit in another EU country coming for more than 180 days (long-term mobility).

What achievements, recognition, awards, publications, reputation or other evidence establishes the required level?

A higher education degree giving access to a doctoral programme, with suitability determined by the employer (or an employer declaration of appropriate level); the employer must approve the research aim, duration and required funding.

Is an employer, nominator, recognised body, peer group or government endorsement required?

Yes: the research institute (employer) must be an IND-recognised sponsor, the researcher needs an employment contract or hosting agreement with it, and the employer submits the application.

Can the holder change employer, work independently, establish a business or conduct other professional activity? What is the family position?

The holder may work without a work permit (TWV) — "work permitted without restrictions" — but must continue to meet the researcher permit requirements. Research may be carried out temporarily in other EU countries (except Denmark and Ireland) via intra-EU mobility, with the employer notifying the IND. The official source does not state whether the holder may change research institute, or the family position.

Limits of the record
  • Family position not stated on the page.
  • Change of employer/research institute not explicitly addressed.

What duration, renewal and accelerated or normal longer-term residence pathway is officially stated?

Valid as long as the contract with the research institute, 5 years at most (long-term mobility: as long as the host agreement); it can be extended. After job loss there are up to 3 months to find a new one (up to 6 months if job lost on or after 22 May 2026 and permit held two years or more). After 5 years with a residence permit, a permanent residence permit can be applied for.
