For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

It depends on nationality. The official country-wise list assigns each nationality one of: no visa required, visa on arrival (sixty days or two weeks), or visa required prior to travel. Holders of passports issued by EU countries and spouses of Mauritian citizens are among those exempted from visa regulations.

What short-visit purposes does this route cover?

Admission of tourists or other visitors or persons coming for business. Tourist visa: a short vacation visit. Business visa: establishing or conducting a business or investment. Social visa: social and religious activities for those sponsored by socio-cultural organisations. Medical visa: treatment in registered private health care institutions. Visitors may not engage in gainful activity without a valid residence permit.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

The immigration officer at the port of entry decides how long a person can stay. Tourist visa: a maximum of six months may be granted in a calendar year, case by case. Business visa and multiple-entry visa: maximum 120 days in a calendar year with no more than 90 days per trip. Medical visa: granted on arrival for the duration of treatment, not exceeding six months.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

Every person entering must hold a passport or recognised travel document valid beyond the intended stay, a valid return ticket to the country of origin or residence, be eligible to re-enter that country, have adequate funds for the stay, and have a confirmed hotel booking or sponsorship for accommodation. Visa applications also require a bank statement for the last month and hotel reservation details; a sponsor must provide evidence of sponsorship.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

Where a visa is required, apply through Mauritian diplomatic/consular representatives; where none exist, at an Air Mauritius office; otherwise by email to piovisa@govmu.org. Apply at least one month before travel; visas are issued as far as practicable within 12 working days of a complete application and are free. A visa does not guarantee admission. The immigration officer may, with the Minister's approval, vary conditions or extend or limit the stay; extension applications require an application form, passport and arrival-stamp pages, ticket reservation, three months of bank statements and confirmed accommodation or a local sponsor's documents, and applicants must call personally.
